About Me

Why MURAII? MURAII is the abbreviation of my name, Muhammed Aidil Rafie and the month I was born in

My journey into learning photography started in the year of 2009 when I was 13 years old using my first smartphone camera, the Sony Ericson Walkman 350i where I always used my smartphone to capture moments of me with my family and my high school friends. And it always has been like that until I got a hold of my very first entry level DSLR in 2018, the Canon 1100D, which was considered as an old camera during that time of the year.

Academically, I took my SPM and STPM at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Lajau, Labuan at 2013 and 2015 and graduated from Universiti Malaysia Sabah with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology in the year of 2019.

I am an alumni of the Kinabalu Photo Festival 2021 under the mentorship of Haji Shamshahrin Shamsudin, a renowned former photojournalist from Agence France-Presse (AFP) from 1999 until 2000 and European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) from 2004 until 2014 and specializes in travel and editorial photography.

My mentor told me, which I will always remember till the day I die, "We photographers, we don't take pictures. We make them, and we tell stories with them.". And from that, my perspective on photography changed drastically thus making me realized that I have been taking pictures this whole time and not making or telling stories with them.

Even so, personally I don't fancy or consider myself as a photographer although I love photojournalism and street photography, as I love to take pictures of the moments around me either with my camera or most of the time with my smartphone. But the main reason why is, I have yet started any photography projects that can contribute to the well-being or good for my subjects in my photos. I think of myself more like a visual archivist, as I love to archive most of my photographs and later edit all of them to make a series of photos according to themes that I want to make.
